Quick answer: Clash Royale Hero cards are enhanced versions of standard cards that carry a unique single-use ability, usable from the moment the Hero is unlocked with 200 Hero Shards. There were 13 Heroes live as of May 2026 — Hero Knight (3 elixir), Hero Giant (5), Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A. (4), Hero Musketeer (4), Hero Wizard (5), Hero Ice Golem (2), Hero Goblins (2), Hero Mega Minion (3), Hero Barbarian Barrel (2), Hero Magic Archer (4), Hero Balloon (5), Hero Dark Prince (4), and Hero Bowler (5) — with Hero Tombstone joining on June 1, 2026 as the 14th. Each adds +5 to your Collection Level under the May 26, 2026 Q2 update. Best deck archetype, key matchups, and full role breakdown for every Hero are documented in this encyclopedia.

Hero cards are the highest-impact unit type in Clash Royale. Each Hero takes a standard card (Knight, Mini P.E.K.K.A., Musketeer, Giant, etc.) and adds an activatable or passive ability unique to that Hero form. This encyclopedia documents all 13 Heroes live as of May 2026 — role, elixir cost, key matchups, best deck archetype, and a link to the full dedicated guide. For the deeper mechanics of any single Hero, follow the link at the end of its section.

For the Q2 update context (each Hero unlock = +5 Collection Levels post-patch), see the Q2 Update Hub and Collection Levels Guide.

What Are Hero Cards in Clash Royale?

Impact: massive. Hero cards are upgraded versions of standard cards that carry a Hero-specific ability, available from the moment you unlock the Hero — there is no level gate. Mechanically:

  • Unlock path: every card with a Hero variation costs 200 Hero Shards to unlock. Hero Shards come from Pass Royale, Hero Mode draft rewards and events; the Hero Box was removed from Trophy Road in the 2026 Q1 Update (February 23, 2026).
  • Deck slots: a Hero is placed in the Hero or Wild slot (the Hero slot unlocks at Arena 5), shared with Champions, so you can run at most two Heroes in a deck. You cannot run a Hero and its base card in the same deck.
  • Single-use abilities: since the August 3, 2026 patch every Hero ability is strictly single-use per deployment — no cooldowns, no recharges.
  • Ability scaling: Each Hero ability has properties (damage, range, duration, charge time) that scale with the Hero's level.
  • Collection Level value: Under the May 26, 2026 Q2 update, every Hero form you unlock grants +5 Collection Levels — the same weight as 5 individual card upgrades.
  • Identifying Heroes: In-deck, Hero cards have a distinct gold/crown frame and are labeled "Hero [card name]".

For a broader breakdown of the Hero mechanic, see Hero Cards Guide.

Hero Tombstone arrived in the June 2026 update on June 1, 2026 as the 14th Hero. See the section below for details.

Hero Valkyrie and Hero Berserker shipped together on August 3, 2026 with Season 86 "K.H.A.O.S" as the 15th and 16th Heroes; Hero Berserker is a 2-elixir Hero. Hero Ice Wizard is the 17th Hero, arriving September 7, 2026 with Season 87 "Minion Academy" via Pass Royale (or 200 Hero Coins from the shop after the season). Its Frosty Fella ability drops a snowman that freezes all nearby troops until the snowman is destroyed, which also frees your own push; Supercell has not published its Elixir cost, ability cost, or stats. See the Season 87 hub for the launch details.

Which Hero Should You Unlock First?

Impact: significant. The optimal unlock order depends on your primary deck archetype and current trophy range.

For cycle decks (Hog 2.6, Mortar Cycle, Xbow 2.9): Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A. first. The single-target slayer ability shuts down opposing tanks faster than any defensive trade in the slot.

For Beatdown decks (Giant, Royal Giant, Mega Knight, Golem): Hero Giant first. Heroic Hurl throws the defender's biggest body out of the way, which is exactly what a full-court push needs.

For Bridge Spam (MK Bridge Spam, Ram Rider, Bandit): Hero Knight first. The tank-with-ability allows aggressive trades while preserving your King Tower bait.

For Spell Bait (Goblin Barrel, Princess, Dart Goblin): Hero Barbarian Barrel first. Replaces your standard Log/Barbarian Barrel slot with an upgraded reroll mechanic that punishes swarm misplays.

For Control / Counter-push: Hero Musketeer first. The glass-cannon profile pays off when you can shield her behind tank defenses and let her clean up.

For the per-trophy-range recommendation, the Hero Picker Quiz tool provides a personalized recommendation based on your playstyle.

Hero Knight

Impact: significant. Elixir: 3. Hero Knight is a 3-elixir tank with the "Triumphant Taunt" ability, which costs 3 elixir to activate. Triumphant Taunt gives him a shield and taunts nearby enemies, forcing them to attack him instead of your tower — there is no stun and no area damage. Functions as both a defensive anchor (tanks 3+ elixir of opposing damage) and a counter-push pivot, because the taunt drags support troops off their path.

Best matchups: Mega Knight pushes (the taunt pulls MK onto the shield), Prince and Dark Prince charges (taunting mid-approach eats the charge on the shield), Bandit dash-ins.

Bad matchups: Inferno Dragon and Inferno Tower (constant DPS ramp ignores his shield), Sparky (her one-shot exceeds his HP), Goblin Drill swarms (he can't reach the spawn point in time).

Deck archetype: Bridge Spam, Cycle (Hog Cycle with Hero Knight tank), Control.

For the full Triumphant Taunt ability map and taunt-radius mechanics, the Hero Cards Guide covers Hero Knight in the Knight section.

Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A.

Impact: significant. Elixir: 4. Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A. retains Mini P.E.K.K.A.'s single-target burst-damage profile and adds the "Breakfast Boost" ability — he eats pancakes to level himself up, and the longer you wait before cashing it in, the more pancakes he cooks and the bigger the boost. The ability is a self-buff, not a dash — he gains no extra reach.

Best matchups: Tank-heavy decks (Giant, Royal Giant, Mega Knight, Goblin Giant), Champion cards, Sparky on the back line — a fully cooked Breakfast Boost turns each of those trades into a one-sided one.

Bad matchups: Swarm decks (Bats, Skeletons, Goblin Gang chew through him — and since the August 3, 2026 single-use ability change, Breakfast Boost never resets), air-heavy decks (he can't target air).

Deck archetype: Cycle, Control, Counter-push.

Hero Musketeer

Impact: significant. Elixir: 4. Hero Musketeer takes the standard Musketeer's 6-tile ranged DPS and adds the "Trusty Turret" ability — she plants a short-range, rapid-firing auto-turret that deals landing damage in front of her when it drops. Glass-cannon profile — extremely punishing if she connects, but dies to most direct counters.

Best matchups: Lava Hound, Balloon, Mega Knight (when defended behind a tank), Three Musketeers split-lane pressure.

Bad matchups: Rocket / Lightning spell cycles (she's a 2-spell kill), Mini P.E.K.K.A. or Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A. (she dies to any single-target close-range pressure), Prince charge.

Deck archetype: Beatdown support, LavaLoon, Control.

Hero Giant

Impact: massive. Elixir: 5. Hero Giant is the definitive Beatdown anchor Hero. Inherits Giant's tank profile (high HP, building-only targeting) and adds the "Heroic Hurl" ability — he grabs the highest-hitpoint enemy troop in reach and throws it across the Arena, deleting the defender's tank from the defence entirely.

Best matchups: Mini P.E.K.K.A., P.E.K.K.A. and Mega Knight defences (Heroic Hurl throws the single biggest body off him), low-DPS defenses, Inferno Tower support troops.

Bad matchups: Skeleton and Goblin swarm trades (there is no big body to hurl and the swarm body-blocks his pathing), Inferno Tower (the ramp burns him regardless of the hurl), Spell cycle decks (Lightning + Rocket erases support troops behind him).

Deck archetype: Beatdown (any flavor), Goblin Giant variants, Three Musketeers pivot.

Hero Wizard

Impact: significant. Elixir: 5. Hero Wizard keeps the Wizard's ranged splash profile and adds the "Tornado Pull" ability (3 elixir to activate), a Tornado-style vortex that sucks enemy troops into the middle of his splash. Best-in-class for collapsing a swarm into one damage packet.

Best matchups: Skeleton Army, Goblin Gang and Barbarians (the pull stacks them into a single splash), Graveyard defences, Minion Horde.

Bad matchups: Rocket and Lightning cycles (5 elixir of glass cannon is a clean spell trade), Mini P.E.K.K.A. and Prince dives, single-target tanks he cannot out-DPS.

Deck archetype: Beatdown support, Control, Graveyard counter-play.

Hero Ice Golem

Impact: small. Elixir: 2. Hero Ice Golem is the cheapest tank in the Hero pool at 2 elixir, carrying the "Frostfall" ability (2 elixir to activate) that leaves a slow-zone on death, cutting enemy attack speed inside it. The April 26, 2026 patch removed the death-knockback, which capped its defensive ceiling.

Best matchups: Hog Rider and Battle Ram (kiting plus a slow-zone buys the tower two extra hits), Sparky (the slow drags out her charge), Musketeer pulls.

Bad matchups: Spell-heavy control decks (his damage never threatens anything), Inferno Tower pushes, air decks.

Deck archetype: Cycle, Bridge Spam, Beatdown pre-push.

Hero Goblins

Impact: small. Elixir: 2. Hero Goblins is a 2-elixir swarm with the "Sneak Spawn" ability (1 elixir to activate) — it respawns additional Goblins behind enemy lines. The April 26, 2026 patch moved that respawn point one tile further back, cutting the counter-push value.

Best matchups: Single-target tanks (Giant, Golem, Royal Giant), Sparky, undefended bridge pushes where the sneak-spawned Goblins land on the tower.

Bad matchups: Any splash card (Wizard, Valkyrie, Bomber, The Log), Arrows-heavy decks, Baby Dragon.

Deck archetype: Cycle, Spell Bait, Bridge Spam.

Hero Balloon

Impact: massive. Elixir: 5. Hero Balloon is a 5-elixir air win condition carrying the "Coffin Cadets" ability (1 elixir to activate). It drops a Coffin Cadet skeleton crew that deploys on crash and keeps fighting after the balloon is gone, effectively stacking a free skeleton squad on top of the death bomb.

Best matchups: Buildings-light decks, ground-only defences, Beatdown mirrors where the tank is stuck in the other lane.

Bad matchups: Tesla and Inferno Tower defences, Musketeer and Hero Musketeer, air-swarm decks (Minion Horde, Bats).

Deck archetype: LavaLoon, Balloon Cycle, Beatdown.

Hero Barbarian Barrel

Impact: significant. Elixir: 2. Hero Barbarian Barrel converts the standard Barbarian Barrel spell into a rerollable hybrid spell. After the initial cast, the player can manually reroll the projectile path within a defined range — punishing predictable defenses and chaining secondary Barbarian-spawn locations.

Best matchups: Spell Bait decks (Goblin Barrel pulled toward different lane), Defensive swarms (Skeleton Army repositioned), Princess and Dart Goblin chip.

Bad matchups: Decks without swarm reliance (the reroll loses value), all-tank pushes (the Barbarian spawn dies instantly).

Deck archetype: Cycle, Bridge Spam, Spell Bait.

For exact reroll range and chained Barbarian-spawn mechanics, see Hero Barbarian Barrel Guide.

Hero Mega Minion

Impact: small. Elixir: 3. Hero Mega Minion takes Mega Minion's 3-elixir air slayer profile and adds the "Warp Strike" ability that snaps him to a target location and deals burst damage on arrival. The warp reaches across the river and past defensive units — but since August 3, 2026 it is single-use per deployment (Hero abilities no longer run on cooldowns). Warp damage was cut from 412 to 373 on May 4, 2026 and then pushed back up to 399 by the August 3, 2026 rework, which also raised his Crown Tower damage reduction from 50% to 75% and made it permanent.

Best matchups: Air decks (LavaLoon, Loon Cycle), Goblin Drill pushes (the warp catches the drill before submerge), Hero Bowler chip (the warp dodges his rocks).

Bad matchups: Inferno Tower (the warp doesn't reset its DPS ramp), Mini P.E.K.K.A. (the warp damage doesn't kill her), Tornado pull lanes.

Deck archetype: Cycle, Counter-push, anti-LavaLoon control.

See the May 2026 balance changes for the recent warp damage adjustment.

Hero Dark Prince

Impact: significant. Elixir: 4. Hero Dark Prince is the 2026 Q2 Pass Royale Hero. Inherits Dark Prince's shield + charge mechanic and adds the "Destructive Dismount" ability — he dismounts, dealing damage as he lands, and then fights on foot while his Rhino keeps charging into buildings. One activation splits him into two threats.

Best matchups: Swarm-heavy decks (the dismount damage clears the pocket while the Rhino runs on), Skeleton Army or Goblin Gang body-blocks (the Rhino ignores them and charges the building).

Bad matchups: Single-target burst (Mini P.E.K.K.A., Sparky, Hero Musketeer's Trusty Turret), Inferno Tower (it burns the dismounted Dark Prince down once his shield pops).

Deck archetype: Bridge Spam, Control, Counter-push.

For full Destructive Dismount and shield HP mechanics, see Hero Dark Prince Guide.

Hero Bowler

Impact: significant. Elixir: 5. Hero Bowler is the Bowler's Mixtape album event Hero, free to unlock for active album participants in May 2026. Retains Bowler's rolling-rock projectile mechanic and adds the "Stone Swish" ability — he plants his feet and throws boulders with increased range. The June 1, 2026 patch cut the ability duration from 9.0s to 7.3s, which is three boulders, not four.

Best matchups: Bridge spam waves (each extended-range boulder knocks the whole line back), Three Musketeers split (a boulder rolls through all three), Mortar / Xbow chip (the extra range out-ranges both).

Bad matchups: Air decks (he cannot target air at all), single-target high-DPS (Mini P.E.K.K.A. dives him while he is planted and cannot reposition).

Deck archetype: Control, Counter-push, Beatdown support.

See Hero Bowler Guide for the full ability map and album-event unlock path.

Hero Magic Archer

Impact: significant. Elixir: 4. Hero Magic Archer takes Magic Archer's piercing arrow mechanic and adds the "Triple Threat" ability — he summons a decoy and darts backward, then fires a triple shot on his next attack. Like every Hero ability since August 3, 2026, it is single-use per deployment.

Best matchups: Tank-protected support troops (Wizard behind Giant, Musketeer behind Lava Hound), Princess or Dart Goblin chip (the triple shot pierces the whole line).

Bad matchups: Fireball / Poison spell cycles (he dies to either spell in 2 casts), Mini P.E.K.K.A. or Hunter rush (his glass-cannon HP can't absorb pressure).

Deck archetype: Control, Counter-push, Beatdown support.

See Hero Magic Archer Guide for Triple Threat decoy and triple-shot mechanics.

What Is Hero Tombstone?

Impact: significant. Elixir: 3 (ability costs 5 elixir to activate). Hero Tombstone is the June 2026 update Hero and the first building-based Hero card. Mechanically:

  • You play the Tombstone building first — it functions like a standard Tombstone but with enhanced HP.
  • When the Regal Revival ability activates, the Tombstone sacrifices itself and spawns Tomb Queen onto the arena.
  • Tomb Queen is a Hero-tier troop that targets buildings, continuously spawns Skeletons while advancing, and spawns additional Skeletons on death.
  • Critically, Regal Revival can still trigger shortly after the Tombstone is destroyed — losing the building doesn't lose the Hero.

Deck archetype: Skeleton Spam, Bridge Spam (with Hero Tombstone as the secondary win condition), Hybrid Beatdown (Tomb Queen pairs with Giant or Royal Giant building-target pushes).

See the Q2 Update Hub for the full Regal Revival breakdown.

Hero Draft and Hero Mode

Impact: significant. Heroes also appear as the central mechanic of Hero Draft mode, the recurring competitive ladder format introduced in 2025. In Hero Draft:

  • Both players are presented with a randomized pool of Heroes
  • Players alternate-pick from the pool (banning is implicit — once a Hero is picked, the opponent can't pick them)
  • The picked Heroes form a forced deck around them

The Hero Draft tier list rotates each season based on the Hero pool offered and balance changes. For the current rotation, see:

What Are the Best Hero Cards in Clash Royale Right Now?

Impact: significant. As of May 23, 2026 (post-May 4 balance changes):

S-tier (must-play): Hero Giant (Beatdown), Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A. (Cycle), Hero Dark Prince (Bridge Spam, on the strength of Destructive Dismount).

A-tier (very strong): Hero Knight (Bridge Spam/Cycle tank), Hero Musketeer (Beatdown support, LavaLoon), Hero Magic Archer (Control snipe).

B-tier (situational): Hero Barbarian Barrel (Cycle reroll, range cut from 4 tiles to 3 on May 4, 2026), Hero Bowler (Control, niche), Hero Ice Golem and Hero Goblins (cheap 2-elixir utility), Hero Mega Minion (rebounding after the August 3, 2026 rework put warp damage at 399).

Tier placement shifts every patch. The Meta Tracker tool shows current usage % and win rate per Hero in real time.

How Do Heroes Interact With the Collection Levels System?

Impact: significant. Under the May 26, 2026 Q2 update, each Hero you unlock grants +5 Collection Levels — equivalent to 5 card upgrades. This makes stockpiled Hero Shards one of the highest-leverage things to hold before the patch drops.

Strategic implication: do not unlock any Hero pre-patch if you can hold the 200 Hero Shards. Each unlock post-patch contributes +5 Collection Levels AND grants reward-tier credit. Pre-patch unlocks only contribute to your starting Collection Level (no reward-tier credit).

For the full pre-patch action plan, see Collection Levels Guide or use the Upgrade Advisor's Pre-Patch Mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Heroes are there in Clash Royale as of May 2026?

There are 13 Hero cards active as of May 2026: Hero Knight, Hero Giant, Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A., Hero Musketeer, Hero Wizard, Hero Ice Golem, Hero Goblins, Hero Mega Minion, Hero Barbarian Barrel, Hero Magic Archer, Hero Balloon, Hero Dark Prince, and Hero Bowler. Hero Tombstone arrived on June 1, 2026 as the 14th Hero. Hero Valkyrie and Hero Berserker followed on August 3, 2026 (15th and 16th), and Hero Ice Wizard arrives September 7, 2026 with Season 87 as the 17th.

What is the cheapest Hero in Clash Royale?

The cheapest Heroes cost 2 elixir: Hero Ice Golem, Hero Goblins, Hero Barbarian Barrel, and — since August 3, 2026 — Hero Berserker. Hero Knight and Hero Mega Minion sit one step up at 3 elixir.

How do you unlock Hero cards?

Every Hero costs 200 Hero Shards to unlock, earned from Pass Royale, Hero Mode draft rewards and events such as the Bowler's Mixtape album. The Hero Box was removed from Trophy Road in the 2026 Q1 Update on February 23, 2026, so Hero Shards are now the single unlock currency.

Can I use both the Hero and standard version of a card in one deck?

No. A Hero sits in the Hero or Wild slot — shared with Champions, with the Hero slot unlocked at Arena 5 — and you cannot pair it with its own base card, so it is one or the other per deck. A deck holds at most 2 Heroes across those two slots.

Which Hero is best for Hog Cycle?

Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A. is the standard Hero pick for Hog 2.6 and other cycle decks at 4 elixir. His single-target burst shuts down tank counter-pushes (Mega Knight, Giant), and a fully cooked Breakfast Boost turns one defensive trade into a lethal counter-push.

What does +5 Collection Levels per Hero mean?

Under the May 26, 2026 Q2 update, every Hero form you unlock grants +5 Collection Levels — the same weight as 5 individual card upgrades. The Collection Calculator tool shows your projected Collection Level based on unlocked Heroes plus card-level sum plus +5 per Evolution.

When does Hero Tombstone release?

Hero Tombstone released on June 1, 2026 in the June 2026 update as the 14th Hero. It costs 3 elixir, its Regal Revival ability costs 5 elixir to activate, and the Tombstone-with-Tomb-Queen summon is the first building-based Hero in the game.

Are Heroes affected by the Seasonal Arena II ban?

Yes. If a Hero card is in your top 8 Arena I cards, the auto-ban applies to the base card — including both Hero and standard versions. For example, if you win most of your Arena I games with Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A., all Mini P.E.K.K.A. forms (Hero and standard) are banned in Arena II. See Seasonal Trophy Road Guide for full ban-mechanics detail.
