How to Counter LavaLoon in Clash Royale: Counters, Placements & Anti-Air Decks (October 2026)

Updated 2026-10-1323 min read

Quick answer: The most reliable way to counter LavaLoon is to kill the 1,676-hitpoint Balloon (Level 11) before it reaches your tower, clear the six 217-hitpoint Lava Pups with one splash card such as Wizard, and attack the opposite lane the moment your opponent spends 7 elixir on a Lava Hound in the back.

How to Counter LavaLoon in Clash Royale: Counters, Placements & Anti-Air Decks (October 2026)

LavaLoon pairs a 7-elixir Lava Hound (3,581 hitpoints at Level 11) with a 5-elixir Balloon (1,676 hitpoints, 640 damage per hit, 240 more when it dies), a 12-elixir air push that most decks can only answer with two or three cards. When the Hound dies it releases six Lava Pups. The October 6, 2026 patch raised Lava Hound's damage from 53 to 71 and slowed its hit from 1.3 to 1.5 seconds, about 16% more damage per second. Wizard is the splash card this guide recommends first; at 9,000+ the counter table lists Inferno Dragon (258 battles) and Tornado (630 battles). Neither LavaLoon nor Lava Hound is among the 30 most-played archetypes in any band in the October 12, 2026 snapshot. For Balloon decks without a Hound (Lumberloon, Balloon Freeze, Balloon Cycle), see How to Counter Balloon.

Which cards counter LavaLoon?

LavaLoon's counters this guide recommends are Wizard, Inferno Dragon, Firecracker and Dart Goblin, because each hits air. Each table lists a selection of measured counters for one trophy band, most-played first (win-rate and impact figures are withheld), with battles recorded October 6–12, 2026. The tables count every deck with a Lava Hound in it, whatever its archetype label.

Lava Hound samples are thin: most rows rest on 100 to 260 battles, and Goblin Gang at 7,000–8,000 sits exactly on the 100-battle gate, so read the battle counts loosely. Mini P.E.K.K.A, Valkyrie, Skeleton Army, Mega Knight and Knight are also listed, though none can hit anything in the air. They kill the ground escort and lead the counter-push alongside an air answer.

What does each counter card do against a LavaLoon push?

Each counter card does one of three jobs: it damages the Hound and Balloon in the air, it clears the six Lava Pups, or it kills the ground escort. A Lava Pup has 217 hitpoints and hits for 81 every 1.7 seconds, so ask of any splash card whether one hit kills a Pup. Figures are Level 11; changes since August 2026 are dated.

CardElixirHits air?Job against a LavaLoon push
Wizard5Yes304 splash damage per hit since Sep 8, 2026: one hit kills every Pup in the splash, six hits kill a Balloon
Inferno Dragon4YesRamps 35 → 120 → 422 damage every 0.4s; kills a lone Hound in about 6 seconds if nothing resets it
Inferno Tower5YesBuilding that pulls the Hound; ramps 43 → 158 → 847 every 0.4s, about 4.3 seconds on a full Hound
Archers3YesTwo bodies at 5-tile range, 112 damage each; one volley from both (224) kills a Pup
Electro Wizard4Yes0.5s stun resets the Balloon's 640-damage hit; 714 hitpoints at Level 11. Boosted to Level 16 this season, it has 1,141, enough to survive even a Level 16 Fireball (1,100)
Mother Witch4Yes5.5-tile range; Pups she kills turn into Cursed Hogs on your side
Tornado3Yes5.5-tile pull into King Tower range or onto your splash
Arrows3Yes369 damage over three waves; kills every Pup inside it
Fireball4Yes689 damage kills Pups and Skeleton Dragons (560 hitpoints), not Mega Minion (837)
Zap2Yes192 damage leaves Pups alive on 25 hitpoints; its 0.5s stun resets a Balloon about to hit

Where do you meet LavaLoon?

LavaLoon is a niche archetype in October 2026: neither LavaLoon nor Lava Hound appears among the 30 most-played archetypes in any of the six trophy bands in the October 12, 2026 snapshot. That is not zero: tracked LavaLoon lists appear in every band from 5,000–6,000 to 9,000+ (October 12, 2026 refresh).

What is LavaLoon and why does it win?

LavaLoon is a beatdown deck that attacks only through the air. The Lava Hound, a slow, building-targeting flying tank, soaks your anti-air while the Balloon flies behind it. The Hound does little damage (71 every 1.5 seconds since October 6, 2026), but every second spent on its 3,581 hitpoints is a second not spent on the Balloon, which takes 1,520 off a tower with two hits and its death bomb.

The archetype wins on overload. Kill the Hound early and six Pups (486 damage per volley if all six connect) spill over your defenders. Spend your splash spell on the support troops and the Pups arrive with nothing left to stop them. Skeleton Dragons, Mega Minion and Inferno Dragon kill the air defenders you place, and Zap, Fireball or Lightning clear the rest.

Which LavaLoon and Lava Hound lists will you face in October 2026?

The LavaLoon and Lava Hound lists you will face in October 2026 come in six shapes. Every list below is an 8-card deck in our tracked-deck tables from the October 12, 2026 refresh. The "Hound loop" is the Lava Hound plus the four cheapest other cards: the least elixir it takes to see the Hound again.

DeckLabel in our dataCardsAvg ElixirHound loop
Tombstone LavaLoonLavaLoonLava Hound, Balloon, Valkyrie, Mega Minion, Skeleton Dragons, Tombstone, Fireball, Zap4.019 elixir
Inferno Dragon LavaLoonLavaLoonLava Hound, Balloon, Valkyrie, Guards, Inferno Dragon, Skeleton Dragons, Fireball, Zap4.120 elixir
Barbarians LavaLoonLavaLoonLava Hound, Balloon, Barbarians, Mega Minion, Skeleton Dragons, Tombstone, Fireball, Zap4.119 elixir
Miner LavaLoon (Graveyard)LavaLoonLava Hound, Balloon, Miner, Graveyard, Minion Horde, Bats, Tombstone, Poison4.319 elixir
Lava Hound Rune GiantLava HoundLava Hound, Rune Giant, Inferno Dragon, Valkyrie, Skeleton Dragons, Tombstone, Fireball, Zap4.020 elixir
Lava MinerMiner ControlLava Hound, Miner, Phoenix, Flying Machine, Barbarians, Tombstone, Zap, Goblin Curse3.817 elixir

Cycle speed tells you how long you have between Hounds. A 19-elixir loop from an empty bar takes 53.2 seconds at single elixir (1 elixir every 2.8 seconds) and 26.6 in double elixir; the 17-elixir Lava Miner loop takes 47.6 and 23.8. Banked elixir shortens the real gap, so treat these as pace, not a timer: roughly one Hound per minute of single elixir.

How do you place defenders against LavaLoon?

You place defenders against LavaLoon so that they shoot the Balloon rather than the 3,581-hitpoint Hound flying in front of it, stand outside one spell's radius, and are still alive when the Hound pops into six Pups. The Balloon-only basics are in How to Counter Balloon; what changes here is the tank. The Hound targets buildings only, has a 3.5-tile range and looks for targets within 5.5 tiles, so a building in its path changes where the whole push goes.

Where should you place Inferno Tower against Lava Hound?

Inferno Tower against Lava Hound goes in the centre of your side, a few tiles back from the river, placed as the Hound crosses the bridge. The Hound turns toward it instead of your Princess Tower and crosses the range of both Princess Towers. At Level 11 Inferno Tower ramps from 43 to 158 to 847 damage per hit, one hit every 0.4 seconds and a new stage every 1.5 seconds: about 4.3 seconds of uninterrupted lock-on kills a full 3,581-hitpoint Hound. Most tracked LavaLoon lists carry Zap, and Zap, an Electro Dragon chain or Lightning resets the ramp, so keep a second air defender behind the Inferno for the Balloon. Inferno Tower is listed at 9,000+ (143 battles); Tesla (4 elixir, no ramp to reset) at 8,000–9,000 (132 battles).

Where should you place Wizard, Musketeer or Electro Wizard?

Wizard, Musketeer and Electro Wizard should be placed late, after the Balloon has crossed the river, beside the lane the Balloon is flying down. A troop locks onto the nearest target in range and keeps it, so a shooter placed early locks onto the Hound in front and spends its whole life on 3,581 hitpoints while the Balloon connects. Placed late and close to the Balloon's path, it picks the Balloon instead, and the Hound keeps soaking your Princess Tower's shots. Keep it far enough back that the Hound dies inside its range: Wizard's 304-damage splash (since September 8, 2026) then kills a Pup with every hit, and Musketeer's 217 damage per shot is exactly a Pup's 217 hitpoints. Electro Wizard's 0.5-second stun resets the Balloon's hit each time it fires. All three survive one Fireball at equal level (Level 11: 755, 721 and 714 hitpoints against 689 damage).

How far apart should your air defenders be?

Your air defenders should be more than 7 tiles apart, so one spell cannot catch two of them. Fireball covers a circle 5 tiles across; Lightning, carried by some LavaLoon lists, covers 7 tiles, strikes the three highest-hitpoint targets inside it and deals 1,057 damage at Level 11, enough to kill a Musketeer or Wizard of the same level outright. This season's boosted Electro Wizard (Level 16, 1,141 hitpoints) survives a Level 11 Lightning. Spaced out, Lightning trades 6 elixir for one card instead of two.

How do you use Tornado against LavaLoon?

You use Tornado against LavaLoon on the Hound's pop, not on the Hound. Six Pups spawn where the Hound dies and spread out toward your tower; a 3-elixir Tornado (5.5-tile radius) cast at that moment drags them back into one clump, and if the Balloon is flying close behind, it is pulled into the same clump and away from your tower. Tornado's own 154 damage does not kill a 217-hitpoint Pup, so cast it over a Wizard or Executioner, or follow it with Arrows. Pulling that clump over your King Tower on the first push also activates the King for the rest of the match. Tornado is the most-played listed counter at 9,000+ on 630 battles, the largest sample in any of our Lava Hound tables.

How do you clear the Lava Pups?

You clear the Lava Pups with one card that kills a 217-hitpoint unit in a single hit, timed for the moment the Hound pops. Arrows (369 damage over three waves), Fireball (689) and Wizard (304) all do it. Zap (192) leaves every Pup alive on 25 hitpoints, and Fire Spirit (215 since September 16, 2026) falls 2 short. Arrows is listed at 6,000–7,000 (252 battles) and 8,000–9,000 (163 battles).

How do you defend the LavaLoon and Lava Hound versions?

The LavaLoon and Lava Hound versions need different priorities: kill the Balloon first against the classic lists, kill the Inferno Dragon early in the Guards list, and treat Lava Miner as a ground threat behind an air tank.

How do you defend Tombstone LavaLoon?

Tombstone LavaLoon is defended by saving your splash spell for the Pups and never sending a ground push straight into its Tombstone. The 4.0-elixir list aims Fireball and Zap at your air defenders, so kill the Balloon first, accept some Hound chip, and spend Arrows or Fireball when the Hound pops. Mega Minion (837 hitpoints) survives a Fireball; finish it with your tower.

How do you defend Inferno Dragon LavaLoon?

Inferno Dragon LavaLoon is defended by killing its Inferno Dragon early, because its ramp melts an Inferno Tower or Mega Knight that sits still. Its Guards (256-hitpoint shields) and Valkyrie screen it from your swarms, so shoot it with a ranged air card while it is still behind the Hound.

How do you defend Barbarians LavaLoon?

Barbarians LavaLoon is defended by keeping a cheap ground answer for the five 716-hitpoint Barbarians (+25 hitpoints on August 3, 2026) it drops as a counter-push or in front of the Balloon. Valkyrie's splash (266 damage) handles the group, and a Wizard placed for the air push splashes them too; a Mini P.E.K.K.A only kills them one at a time. Don't spend your splash spell on them while the Hound is alive.

How do you defend Miner LavaLoon?

Miner LavaLoon is defended like a chip deck with an air tank in front. The 4.3-elixir Graveyard list (tracked at 8,000–9,000) sends Miner to tank for the Balloon on one push and Graveyard behind the Hound on another. Keep one ground splash card for the Graveyard's skeletons and one ranged air card for the Balloon. Miner's Crown Tower damage fell from 49 to 39 on July 6, 2026, so let a lone Miner chip and save the elixir for the Hound.

How do you defend Lava Hound decks without a Balloon?

Lava Hound decks without a Balloon are defended by killing whatever win condition replaces it, because the Hound alone deals only about 47 damage a second to a tower. The Rune Giant list (tracked at 9,000+) puts a 2,816-hitpoint ground tank in front; Mini P.E.K.K.A or Valkyrie for the Rune Giant and one air card for the dragons behind it is enough. Lava Miner (labelled Miner Control in our data, tracked at 7,000–8,000 and above; see How to Counter Miner Control) chips with Miner and Barbarians while Phoenix and Flying Machine add air damage; Phoenix is reborn as an egg when it dies, so kill the egg before it hatches. Golem decks that also carry a Lava Hound are covered in How to Counter Beatdown Decks.

What about Balloon decks without a Lava Hound?

Balloon decks without a Lava Hound (Lumberloon, Balloon Freeze, Balloon Cycle) are a different archetype with ground escorts, covered in How to Counter Balloon. A Hero Balloon can appear in either; its Coffin Cadets ability is covered in the Hero Balloon guide.

Playing one of these decks?

Deck Doctor grades any deck in seconds — synergy, meta fit, and the swaps that fix its weak spots. See your grade before you sign up.

How do you punish LavaLoon on offense?

You punish LavaLoon on offense by attacking the opposite lane the moment a Lava Hound appears behind their King Tower. From a full 10-elixir bar, a Hound in the back leaves your opponent with 3 elixir, and rebuilding the 7 takes 19.6 seconds at single elixir (9.8 in double). The Hound flies slowly, so your push lands first: they either defend it with the elixir meant for the Balloon or take tower damage.

Commit whenever your towers can absorb the Hound's push. A Hog Rider (317 damage per hit at Level 11), a Ram Rider (271 since October 6, 2026) or an X-Bow at the bridge all force the response you want; a slow Golem of your own gives them time to add the Balloon. After a full 12-elixir Hound-plus-Balloon push, defend with 5 to 8 elixir and counter-push with what survives; Mega Knight (7 elixir) and Mini P.E.K.K.A (4) fit this role, since both kill the ground escort and lead the counter-push.

Which decks beat LavaLoon?

Decks that carry two or more air-targeting cards, a splash answer to the Pups and a fast win condition are the best fit against LavaLoon. This is an editorial judgment from card interactions: Trophy Road matchup results are withheld, and the only measured result is TrophyCoach's 9,000+ archetype-matchup verdict for Hog Cycle, roughly even. The other three tracked decks (October 12, 2026 refresh) have no LavaLoon result, so their case rests on the air-targeting cards they carry. Current lists by band are in the Deck Finder.

| Deck | Cards | Avg Elixir | Counter cards it carries | Why it works | 9,000+ verdict vs LavaLoon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Log Bait | Goblin Barrel, Princess, Goblin Gang, Rocket, Inferno Tower, Knight, The Log, Ice Spirit | 3.3 | Inferno Tower, Princess, Goblin Gang, Rocket, Knight | Inferno Tower pulls the Hound; Goblin Barrel and Rocket punish the other lane | No result |
| X-Bow Siege (Electro Spirit) | X-Bow, Tesla, Archers, Knight, Skeletons, Electro Spirit, Fireball, The Log | 3.0 | Tesla, Archers, Fireball, Knight | X-Bow at the bridge punishes a 7-elixir Hound; Tesla and Archers hit air | No result |
| Hog Cycle (Executioner Rocket) | Hog Rider, Executioner, Tornado, Rocket, Valkyrie, Goblins, The Log, Ice Spirit | 3.4 | Executioner, Tornado, Rocket, Valkyrie | Executioner and Tornado handle the Pups; a 4-elixir Hog Rider punishes the Hound | Roughly even |
| Mega Knight (Electro Wizard, Inferno Tower) | Mega Knight, Electro Wizard, Inferno Tower, Firecracker, Arrows, Bomber, Elixir Golem, Freeze | 3.9 | Mega Knight, Electro Wizard, Inferno Tower, Firecracker, Arrows | Inferno Tower and Electro Wizard hit air; Arrows clears the Pups | No result |

Why is Log Bait well equipped against LavaLoon?

Log Bait is well equipped against LavaLoon because five of its eight cards (Inferno Tower, Princess, Goblin Gang, Rocket, Knight) deal with the Hound, the Pups or the escort; the pair has no head-to-head result. Inferno Tower pulls and melts the Hound, Princess chips from 9 tiles away, and Goblin Gang's Spear Goblins hit air. Goblin Barrel and Rocket punish the opposite lane after a 7-elixir Hound.

Why is X-Bow Siege well equipped against LavaLoon?

X-Bow Siege is well equipped against LavaLoon, though the pair has no head-to-head result, because it answers a Hound in the back with an X-Bow at the bridge and still has Tesla and Archers for the air push. Tesla (4 elixir) and Archers (3) hit air; Fireball clears the Pups and Skeleton Dragons. X-Bow itself only hits ground, so it never shoots the Hound.

What changed for LavaLoon in Season 88?

Lava Hound got its first change in our registry window on October 6, 2026: more damage per hit, a slower hit speed and a net DPS increase of about 16%. The base Balloon card was not changed. The table lists selected registry changes since May 2026 to cards in the Lava Hound lists and punish decks on this page; the Season 88 guide covers the whole season.

Impact: significant. Lava Hound's damage rose from 53 to 71 while its hit speed slowed from 1.3 to 1.5 seconds, so damage per second goes from about 40.8 to 47.3. An unanswered Hound now takes noticeably more off a tower, which helps the Balloon-less lists most.

Impact: significant. Wizard's damage rose from 281 to 304 on September 8, 2026. One hit still kills a 217-hitpoint Pup and six still kill a Level 11 Balloon (five fall 156 short), but a 3,581-hitpoint Hound now takes 12 hits instead of 13.

Impact: small. Fireball's Crown Tower damage fell from 172 to 159 on September 8, 2026, and Zap's from 58 to 48 on June 1, so the spells every classic LavaLoon list carries finish slightly less of a tower. Their troop damage (689 and 192) is unchanged.

Impact: small. Rune Giant gained damage (120 → 153, June 1) and hitpoints (2,662 → 2,816, August 3), so the Balloon-less Rune Giant Hound list carries a sturdier ground tank. Miner LavaLoon's Graveyard drops 12 skeletons instead of 13 since June 1.

Impact: small. Fire Spirit's damage rose to 215 on September 16, 2026, still 2 short of a Pup's 217 hitpoints. Barbarians' 25 extra hitpoints make Barbarians LavaLoon's counter-push slightly sturdier. Ram Rider (250 → 271) and X-Bow (58 → 61) gained damage on October 6, which makes both punish options above slightly stronger. Skeleton Dragons (161 → 151 on May 4) still kill a Princess, Dart Goblin or Firecracker in two volleys from both dragons (604 damage).

What are the most common mistakes against LavaLoon?

The most common mistakes against LavaLoon come from treating it as one threat when it is three: the Hound, the Balloon and the Pups.

Mistake 1: waiting when the Hound appears in the back. Your opponent has 3 elixir left from a full bar and needs 19.6 seconds to rebuild 7. Attack the opposite lane immediately.

Mistake 2: shooting the Hound while the Balloon connects. The Hound deals about 47 damage a second; the Balloon deals 640 per hit. Point your best air card at the Balloon and let the Hound chip.

Mistake 3: spending the splash spell before the Hound pops. Fireball the Skeleton Dragons early and six 217-hitpoint Pups arrive unopposed. Hold Arrows or Fireball for the pop.

Mistake 4: grouping air defenders inside one spell. One Lightning kills a Musketeer or Wizard of its own level outright; keep them more than 7 tiles apart.

Mistake 5: using Zap or Fire Spirit on the Pups. Both leave every 217-hitpoint Pup alive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best card to counter LavaLoon?

Wizard is the strongest all-round LavaLoon counter: at 5 elixir his 304 splash damage kills a 217-hitpoint Lava Pup in one hit, and six hits kill a 1,676-hitpoint Balloon.

Is Inferno Tower good against Lava Hound?

Inferno Tower is good against Lava Hound if nothing resets it: its ramp kills a 3,581-hitpoint Hound in about 4.3 seconds. Most tracked LavaLoon lists carry Zap, so back it with a second air card.

Did Lava Hound get buffed in October 2026?

Lava Hound was buffed in the October 6, 2026 patch: damage 53 → 71 (+33%) with hit speed 1.3s → 1.5s, about 16% more damage per second. Balloon was not changed in the same patch.

What kills Lava Pups in one hit?

Lava Pups have 217 hitpoints at Level 11, so Arrows (369 damage), Fireball (689) and Wizard (304) kill them in one hit. Zap (192) and Fire Spirit (215) fall short and leave every Pup alive.

How do I beat LavaLoon without a building?

LavaLoon can be beaten without a building by placing two ranged air defenders more than 7 tiles apart, one behind your Princess Tower for the Balloon, and keeping Arrows or Fireball for the six Pups.

Is LavaLoon still good in October 2026?

LavaLoon is a niche deck in October 2026: neither LavaLoon nor Lava Hound is among the 30 most-played archetypes in any trophy band (October 12 snapshot). The Hound gained 18 damage per hit on October 6.

Should I attack when they play Lava Hound in the back?

Lava Hound in the back is the moment to attack: from a full bar they have 3 elixir left and need 19.6 seconds of single elixir to rebuild 7.

**Methodology:** Counter tables: win_condition_counters, October 6–12, 2026, every deck with a Lava Hound, pairs gated at 100+ battles on both sides, listed most-played first (by battles with the counter); win rates and impact figures withheld because no band is published yet.
